Worship - September 2019

Church Family,

I don't know about you, but sometimes I don’t feel like singing. I can hear some   people say now, “What? You’re a worship leader, aren’t you always singing? I guess to some extent that is true. I spend a lot of time singing, whether it be for rehearsal, practice, a service, or just singing in my car, I do sing, a lot. But that doesn’t mean I always want to. Sometimes I’ve had a long day, long week, or long month. Sometimes my allergies kick in and I lose my voice. There are simply times that I don’t feel like singing. But whenever I think of worship, I think of singing. I believe God commands us to sing in worship. Psalm 147:1 says, “Praise the LORD! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting.” We are commanded to sing! Even on Sundays when we simply don’t feel like it. At times when I don’t feel like singing,  I’m reminded of Psalm 40, which says, "I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God."

I am thankful that God has given us a song to sing. I am thankful that he has set our feet upon a rock, and that He has made our steps secure. I know that everyone might not have the best singing voice, or sometimes, when it comes to worshipping, we just don't feel like it. But the reality is that we were made to glorify God through worship. One of my favorite worship song writers, Aaron Keyes said, "Worship is like breathing. It's something we were constantly created to do.

As a Christian, even if you feel like you don't have a voice, you have a song to sing. You were created for worship, and it's not only as we gather together on Sundays, but it's how we live our lives on Monday, Tuesday, etc. So this week, remember you were created for worship, and it's the way you live your life day in and day out. Remember to worship God this week not only through your voice, but through your life. Let's all commit to love people well, and to serve people well, all for the glory of God. And then we’ll join together on Sunday, and unite our hearts and voices in singing praises to Him. I look forward to the day.

In Christ,
Jared

Church Family,

This month, I want to leave you with an article written by a man named David Santistevan, who serves as the Worship Pastor at Allison Park Church in Pittsburgh. In his article, he writes about the importance of corporate worship, and why we all need the Church. I would invite you to read this article, and to consider the role of corporate   worship in your own life. We all need the Church! Here is his article:

“More than a few times I’ve heard from people who don’t care to attend church because they can have their “time with Jesus” at home. There’s nothing wrong with “Jesus time” at home. But if it’s a replacement for the gathered singing of the people of God, it is a problem. And I don’t think Jesus would be happy with your decision.

But let’s be honest. Sometimes connecting with God is a challenge in church. Sure, it’s amazing when you’re in a room full of passionate people pursuing an all-glorious Savior. But there’s something beautiful and necessary about the mess of your church on Sunday. It’s awkward. It’s inconvenient. And it’s beautiful.

Of course, it doesn’t look like a Casting Crowns tour. Your band isn’t that good. Your production isn’t that good. Your budget isn’t that big. But do you know what makes the CHURCH impressive? It’s not necessarily the creativity and production. It’s the fact that we are the BRIDE of Jesus – the inheritance of an all glorious, Savior. We are misfits from many walks of life gathered under ONE NAME. We are sinners who’ve screwed up our lives, gathered under ONE CROSS where there is mercy. We are orphans embraced under ONE FATHER, now called sons and daughters.

We are the large, we are the small. We are the rich, we are the poor. We are the smart, we are the uneducated. We are the talented, we are the glossed over. We are the brilliant, we are the broken. We are the church.

And we need your voice in the corporate gathering. And you need that beautiful distraction in your life. It’s a fairy tale to only listen to Bethel records in the comfort of your home. Whether you like the songs or enjoy your band or not, you need Church. And the Church needs you.”
