Women on Mission November 2018

As we approach the end of this calendar year, I wanted to remind our members, as well as, inform the newer ones about our World Mission Club.  This is an opportunity to give to missions on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis.  This is collected throughout the year and distributed at the end of the year, as follows:

Lottie Moon Christmas Offering 51.6%
Annie Armstrong Easter Offering 19.6%
Life Change Central (Oakhill Ministries) 10.0%
State Missions Offering 10.0%
State Camp Offering 8.8%
Our Goal for 2018 is $33,000

If you are not currently giving in this systematic way, please consider doing so in 2019.  Boxed envelopes are provided by the church.  You can designate World Missions Offering on your envelope (this is over and above our titles).  In addition, a special offering is taken for Lottie Moon Christmas Offering and Annie Armstrong Easter Offering which is added to the club receipts at the end of the year.  World Hunger Offering is a separate offering taken in the summer.

The Evansville Rescue Mission has asked us to collect cake mix for their Gobbler Gathering Thanksgiving Baskets.  Our goal is 600 cake mixes!  As of 10/21 we have received approximately 130 boxes.  Deadline is Sunday, November 11th.

Women on Mission will meet on Monday, November 12th at 6:00 pm at the church.  All our ladies are invited to join us.

Women on Mission October 2018

As we look forward to our church’s 55th anniversary, it should be noted that Woman’s Missionary Society was begun very early in the life of Oakhill.  It was later renamed Baptist Women, then Women on Mission.  Upon the death of Mrs. Dorothy Fleming in a tragic accident, the organization’s minutes were never recovered, so the earliest records are not available to us.

The first mention of any organized mission support at Oakhill Chapel was in November 1960 when we voted to receive a Christmas offering, half going to a building fund, half to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for Foreign Missions.  (No record of the amount received.)

The Woman’s Missionary Society seems to have met regularly, beginning in the early 1960’s, before the church was organized.  Children’s groups were provided, beginning as early as 1961.

The parent origination was formed in 1888 in Richmond, Virginia, at a time when women did not work outside the home, husbands ruled the home, and women did not have income at their disposal.  The Foreign Mission Board asked the women’s organization to raise money for missionaries to be sent to China.  Their goal was to collect $2,000.00 to send two missionaries.  $3,315.26 was raised, enough to send three missionaries.

Our Women on Mission group continues to meet each month.  Our goals are to lead the church to learn about missions, support missions through prayer and giving, develop spiritually toward a missions lifestyle, participate in the work of the church and denominations, and engage in missions and personal witnessing.

Women on Mission will meet on Monday, October 8th at 6:00 pm at the church.  All our ladies are invited to join us.

Cake mix boxes for the Evansville Rescue Mission may be left in the main lobby beginning October 7th.
