It would seem that technology is here to stay.  Of course, I am speaking tongue in cheek. I am old enough to remember life before the internet; however, in my lifetime we have seen a technological revolution.  Some of it is amazing– the things we can do, the connectivity, etc.; but many things are troubling about our computerized world.  Pornography tops the list, but also social media addictions, online predators, and many other things that are very worrisome.  How do we raise children to honor the Lord in our current digitally obsessed culture?  I have created a guide that has some helpful guidelines, tips, and links. You can find it at oakhillbc.org/techguide.  I hope it helps you greatly as you navigate the digital landscape.  I also wanted to share a couple of helpful tips for parents.

1.
Educate Yourself - Children are digital natives, meaning technology comes naturally to them, they can't remember a time when the internet did not exist.  They naturally gravitate toward digital devices and can use their expertise with little or no instruction.  Parents must educate themselves before handing their children a digital device.  You might not even realize it but if it can access the internet, you must assume it can access inappropriate content. Game systems and e-readers usually have an internet browser built-in.  While you might have their phone on parental controls, what about other connected devices?  This is just one aspect you must research.  I know it can seem daunting but if you look at the Tech Guide you will find links to parental controls, filters, etc.  Don’t be lazy when it comes to tech, do your research before handing the device to your child.

2. Talk About Tech with Your Child - Your children may be digital natives, but they do not know how to intellectually, emotionally, or spiritually navigate technology.  You have to help them to not only use it responsibly but also to use it for God’s glory to build up and encourage others.  To do this you must talk to them about how to use tech responsibly.  You also must talk to them about how technology can become an idol, which often is seen in digital addictions.  If your child can't put the phone, game system, and streaming remote down then you know there is a problem, and you need to open a dialogue with them.  Before doing so, make sure you are a good example to your child.  They might be learning a cyber addiction by the example you are setting.

3. Set Guidelines - Part of talking to your child is setting digital guidelines or boundaries that your family will abide by.  The Tech Guide that I have provided has a list of guidelines that you should consider.  But a
non-negotiable one is parental controls.  Most devices have robust parental controls.  Learn how to enact them and use them!  I also think every device should have some sort of filter software or accountability software and every home should use a DNS filter on its router.  This three-tier approach will help keep your child as safe as possible.  However, be warned every software can be gotten around and loopholes can be exploited so make it a regular habit of checking your child’s device.  These suggestions are in the Tech Guild along with several others.

Parents, technology does not have to be a bad thing in the life of your family.  You can acquire the knowledge to help your children navigate it well.  You can use it for the glory of God, but you must be willing to step up and take control.  Don’t abdicate your role as parents to digital devices.
